The Capitol was designed by Elijah E. Myers and completed in 1879. The building is made of brick faced with marble and granite, and it features a central rotunda that is capped with a copper-clad dome. The exterior brickwork contains many different colors, due to changes in brick production over time; this is most visible on the north side of the building near the ground level.

The Capitol grounds include several monuments, including a statue of former governor Austin Blair and a monument to Civil War veterans. The Capitol grounds also feature several fountains, including one that commemorates women’s suffrage in Michigan (which was granted in 1918).
